Gibson was founded in 1902 and have made a number of electric guitars that have been extremely popular and used by a wide range of musicians ever since, from beginners to legendary guitarists.
Gibson first entered the world of electric guitars in 1935 when they designed and created the Gibson ES (‘Electric Spanish’), after decades of solely making acoustic instruments. ES Models are hollow-bodied electric guitars, the most popular being the ES-335 and ES-339, and are great for those who want the qualities of an acoustic guitar.
The Gibson Les Paul, first introduced in 1952, is Gibson's most popular model. It was originally created with input from guitarist Les Paul as a guitar to rival the Stratocaster and has since become one of the most recognisable guitars in music history. Les Paul guitars are known for the 'Sunburst' finish, available in a variety of shades - some popular ones being Heritage Cherry Sunburst and Vintage Sunburst. The Gibson Les Paul Junior was introduced in 1954 as a more affordable alternative to the Les Paul, more aimed at beginners, featuring stripped-down looks and P90 pickups.
The Gibson Flying V and the Gibson Explorer were released in 1958, both designed to have radical, futuristic body shapes. Initially, they weren’t very popular and were discontinued, but later on became much more popular, especially with hard rock and metal musicians, and were reissued and have been in production ever since.
The Gibson SG (‘Solid Guitar’) was first introduced in 1961, and the SG Standard is Gibson's best-selling guitar of all time. It’s thinner and more lightweight than the Les Paul, and the double-cutaway makes it easier to play. Its most popular finish is a version of a 'Cherry' finish.
The Gibson Firebird was released in 1963 and was created when the president of Gibson hired a car designer to create a guitar that would become popular - he took the Gibson Explorer shape and rounded the edges, adding lines from car tailfins of the 1950s, and made it have a ‘reverse’ shape where the lower horn is longer than the other.
