First thing to say is that we play guitars with our eyes before we play them with anything else - and this really is a beautiful guitar that the pictures don't do full justice to. The sea foam green and maple top combination really are lovely. Second thing to say is that the weight relief is really well done. I wouldn’t call the instrument lightweight, exactly, but it’s definitely not a heavyweight, either - and it is beautifully balanced, too. The neck is lovely, particularly if like me you find “the full fifties” a bit too much of a good thing. It’s not quite the shredder neck that I’ve seen described in some of the reviews, though; if you are expecting something as slight-and-slinky as an Axis Super Sport, you might be disappointed. Some of the reviews suggested that these Gibson moderns weren’t well set-up out of the box. A good set-up is a super personal thing, but mine was fine. Action on the high-medium side, rather than dusting the frets - but the nut was well cut and intonation was spot-on. I lost myself in it for an hour as soon as I took it out of the case, and I take that as a good sign! As for the tone… whole tomes have been written on the Burstbuckers and whether they are the bright, shiny future of humbling pickups, or an abomination that any right-thinking player should remove from their guitars and burn. There are plenty of demos on YouTube - put on a decent pair of headphones and make up your own mind, or better yet, play some for yourself and make up your own mind. I think this guitar sounds killer - and I also really appreciate the switching options, especially the coil taps - but then I’m also not a dyed-in-the-wool-only-a-59-will-do guy. Overall, I think this is a great guitar. And at nearly 25% off RRP, it was great value, too.
