This Vox AC-30 Top Boost 3-Channel 30-Watt 2x12" Guitar Combo is from the Rose Morris era (1978-1992) is a classic example of British amplifier design. Built during a transitional period for Vox under the management of Rose Morris Ltd., these amps retained much of the tonal character that made the AC-30 legendary while integrating cost-saving manufacturing changes. These include the use of PCB-mounted components instead of point-to-point wiring and adjustments to the power supply design, such as the removal of a choke, which slightly altered the tonal response.
The amp features three channels with six inputs, powered by EL84 tubes and delivering the chime and breakup characteristic of Vox. Its speaker configuration includes two 12" drivers—commonly Fane ceramic speakers during this period, replacing the earlier Celestion "Greenbacks"—which helped shape its sonic identity. The slim black finish marked a departure from the more decorative aesthetics of earlier models, giving these amps a utilitarian look.
Though not as highly regarded as their 1960s counterparts due to perceived differences in build quality and tonal headroom, these amps are appreciated for their affordability and vintage charm. They maintain a faithful jangle and overdrive, perfect for capturing the essence of classic rock and British invasion tones
