A History of Marshall Pedals

Whilst Marshall Amplification are known for being one of the most iconic guitar amp builders in history, with guitar legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson and Eddie Van Halen exploiting the power of a Marshall stack, they also created a line of now sought-after gain pedals back in the early nineties.

The history of Marshall’s pedals dates back to 1966 when Jim Marshall, also known as the “Father of Loud,” decided to branch out into the fuzz pedal market. The first pedal released was the Supa Fuzz, followed by the Supa Wah and Park Fuzz Sound. In 1989, Marshall tasked their head of engineering, Steve Greenrod, to design a pedal that captured the sound of a Marshall stack in a box. The result was the Guv’nor, a pedal that changed the game with its robust metal construction and hard clipping circuit.

The Bluesbreaker, the first pedal in the Black Box series, was released in 1991 and was based on the sound of the 1962 Marshall Bluesbreaker amp. The Drive Master, released in 1992, was the Guv’nor with a cleaner look and slightly more aggressive tone. The Shred Master, also released in 1992, was originally called the Drive With No Name and ended up being used by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. Simply listen to the raw and powerful tones that Greenwood conjured up on The Bends to hear the Shredmaster in full flight.

These pedals, although discontinued in the late 1990s, have had a lasting impact on the pedal market and continue to inspire guitar players today.
