The 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard is often regarded as the pinnacle of electric guitar craftsmanship, with its production year marking a golden era for the model. Fewer than 650 units were produced in 1959, making these guitars rare and highly coveted. They became iconic thanks to their use by legendary players such as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, and Eric Clapton. To commemorate its 60th anniversary in 2019, Gibson Custom Shop reissued a series of '59 Les Paul Standards that capture the essence of the originals.
As standard, you're looking at a mahogany body, paired with a figured maple top, a combination known for its balance of warmth, resonance, and clarity. The Factory Burst finish not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also enhances tonal resonance, thanks to its nitrocellulose lacquer application that allows the wood to breathe. The use of hide glue in construction reflects traditional craftsmanship, contributing to the authentic vintage tonal character. The solid mahogany neck features an Indian rosewood fingerboard adorned with Gibson’s classic trapezoid inlays, maintaining a vintage appearance. With a 24.75" scale length, medium jumbo frets, and lightweight, historically accurate hardware, such as the no-wire ABR-1 bridge and lightweight tailpiece, the reissue preserves the playability and feel of its 1959 counterpart.
The defining tonal feature is the set of Gibson Custom Bucker pickups, designed to replicate the sound of the original Patent Applied For (PAF) humbuckers. These pickups deliver an exceptionally rich harmonic palette, embodying the classic Les Paul tone with authenticity. With meticulous attention to detail, these reissues honor the legacy of the 1959 Les Paul Standard while making it accessible to a new generation of players and collectors.
