The G&L S•500 made its debut in 1982 as Leo Fender’s own evolution of the classic double-cutaway bolt-on guitar. It introduced groundbreaking innovations, including the Dual-Fulcrum vibrato and Magnetic Field Design (MFD) single-coil pickups—both designed by Leo Fender himself.
These MFD pickups deliver a bright and sparkling top end, a robust bottom end, and a focused midrange, offering a rich tonal spectrum perfect for a variety of playing styles. The MFD pickups pack plenty of punch, but the real surprise lies in their versatility. As you roll back the volume and bass controls—thanks to the S•500’s PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) system—the pickups become glassy and detailed without losing clarity.
This tone-shaping flexibility works across all three pickups. Additionally, the G&L Tribute Series S•500 features a push-pull Expander Switch on the treble pot, unlocking neck+bridge or all three pickups together. The neck+bridge combination even delivers a convincing ASAT Special-like tone, adding to the guitar’s impressive versatility. Crafted with a poplar body and a bolt-on maple neck, the S•500 features a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays.
The medium C neck profile, combined with a 305 mm (12") fretboard radius and 22 medium jumbo frets, ensures comfortable playability across the entire 25 1/2" scale length. The 41.3 mm (1.63") nut width makes it accessible for a wide range of players. The electronics are equally robust, featuring three G&L MFD Magnetic Field Design single-coil pickups made in Fullerton, California. The control layout includes one volume knob, two tone controls with the PTB system (including a push/pull function for expanded pickup combinations), and a five-way switch, providing a wealth of tonal possibilities.
Leo Fender’s innovative G&L Dual-Fulcrum vibrato allows for smooth pitch bends up or down, while G&L 18:1 machine heads provide precise tuning stability. Chrome hardware adds a sleek finishing touch. With the G&L S500, you’re getting a guitar that embodies Leo Fender’s legacy of innovation, offering superior tone, versatility, and playability—all in one instrument.
