The Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton II is a reissue model first introduced in 1986, offering a tribute to the classic Sheraton design with a few modern updates. This specific example, dating back to August 1988, was crafted at the Samick factory in Unsung, Korea, during the early era when the "Epiphone by Gibson" logo was prominently featured on the headstock. After 1988, the logo transitioned to simply "Epiphone," though the guitars themselves remained structurally and tonally consistent.
The Sheraton II distinguishes itself from the original Sheraton by replacing the Frequensator tailpiece with a more standard stop-bar unit, improving sustain and stability. Its laminated maple body, complemented by a maple center block, ensures a bright yet warm tonal character. The neck is a striking five-piece maple and walnut design, adding durability and aesthetic flair. The bound fingerboard, likely made of Pau Ferro to circumvent CITES restrictions on rosewood, features intricate "block and triangle" inlays crafted from mother-of-pearl and abalone. The headstock showcases Epiphone's traditional vine inlay, adding a touch of vintage elegance.
This particular Sheraton II is in excellent condition, with light fret wear that reflects careful craftsmanship. Notably, the binding extends up to the fret ends, adhering to the meticulous Gibson methodology of binding and fretting the fingerboard prior to neck attachment.
